Eva Garland, Clinical Director, Esher, UK (Retired November 2008)
Born and grown up in Denmark where she did her nurse training at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. Shortly after graduating she spent two years in America before returning and settling in England.
Her clinical experience was mainly in oncology, surgery and A&E before settling in district nursing. From there she worked in management, first 14 years in the NHS and for the last 18 years in specialist palliative care, 11 years as Director of a National Charity.
The last seven years as Clinical Director in one of the foremost Hospices in the UK. She became "hooked" on palliative care as a district nurse and believe passionately in the importance of end of life care, for the patient, his or her family and for society as a whole.
Since qualifying as a nurse and district nurse she has undertaken regular study to keep up to date clinically and her management experience is based on NHS modular programmes, a Senior Management course at Henley and a MA in Health Policy and Management.
